Usage Limits

Understand the limits and quotas for Free and Pro tiers

LocaleLens uses a fair usage policy to ensure great performance for all users. Limits are designed to comfortably support real-world production use while preventing abuse. Limits include both usage limits (API & AI) and resource limits (projects, keys, locales, team members).

Exceeding limits never breaks existing apps or translations. You'll see soft warnings at 80% usage, giving you time to upgrade or clean up before hitting hard limits.

Scope: Account = shared across all projects you own. Per user = tracked individually per team member.

Account-wide vs Per-Project

All resource limits are account-wide, meaning they apply across all projects you own — not per project.

✓ Within limits:

Free tier:
800 keys, 4 locales
Limit: 1,000 keys, 5 locales — OK

✗ Exceeds limits:

Free tier:
1200 keys, 6 locales
Limit: 1,000 keys, 5 locales — Blocked

Team members: When team members add keys or locales to your project, those resources count against your limits, not theirs. AI usage is the exception — it always counts against the user performing the action.

Project-Owner Billing

Core Principle: Limits follow the project owner

When you create a project, all resource limits (keys, locales, team members) are checked against your account — regardless of who adds the content. This means team members can contribute freely without worrying about their own plan limits.

Team Members

When team members add content to your project:

  • Translation keys count toward your limit
  • Locales count toward your limit
  • Team member slots count toward your limit
AI Usage (Exception)

AI suggestions are the one exception — they always count against the user performing the action, not the project owner. This prevents team members from exhausting your AI quota.

This means Free tier team members still get their own daily AI allowance when working on Pro projects.

Ownership Transfer

When you transfer project ownership, the billing responsibility moves to the new owner. The new owner's limits immediately apply.

Example:

• Alice (Free) owns a project with 800 keys

• Alice transfers ownership to Bob (Pro)

• Keys now count against Bob's 30,000 key limit

The transfer confirmation shows impact on both accounts before proceeding.

  • One Pro subscription covers the whole team
  • Team members contribute without limit anxiety
  • Clear accountability for resource usage

How API limits work:

  • Monthly limit (see above) counted per user across all projects you own
  • Resets on the 1st of each month
  • Returns 429 error when exceeded
  • Team members don't consume your quota (they have their own)

Short spikes are fine — limits are enforced monthly, not daily.

What Happens When Limits are Reached
API Request Limit

When you reach your monthly API request limit:

  • API requests return 429 Too Many Requests
  • Error includes retry-after header with seconds until reset
  • Limit automatically resets on the 1st of next month
  • Upgrade to Pro for immediate access
Resource Limits

When you reach translation key, locale, or team member limits:

  • Creation attempts are blocked with clear error messages
  • Existing resources continue to work normally (read-only mode)
  • Soft warnings appear at 80% usage
  • Upgrade prompt shown when attempting to exceed
